The Five Pillars

Shelter

high confidence4.6 / 5
"Rooms are widely praised as cozy, clean, and beautifully decorated with colonial charm. Guests highlight the excellent heating amenities like electric blankets and room heaters, though a couple of reviews noted minor maintenance issues or musty smells in bathrooms."

Water

low confidence3.8 / 5
"Very few reviews mention water supply or hot water reliability directly, though bathrooms are generally described as well-equipped, with isolated complaints about a musty smell."

Hearth

high confidence4.7 / 5
"The hospitality of the hosts (Sharon, Sanjeev, Shalla) and manager Mr. Basant Rai is highly celebrated, with guests feeling like family. The daily breakfast is described as exceptional and varied, though some guests note that other meals are not served in-house or must be pre-ordered/sourced from outside."

Path

high confidence3.2 / 5
"The property is in a peaceful location within walking distance of Mall Road, but direct car access is not possible. Guests must walk down a steep, narrow, and sometimes uneven path or stairs for the last stretch, which is challenging for elderly travelers or those with mobility issues."

The English Cottage is a brilliant mix of class and contemporary comforts. Located on top of a hill with a panoramic view of the mountains, it’s a perfect spot to stay in Darjeeling. The staff is super helpful and the owners treat you like a personal guest. The manager Me. Basant has a solution for all your requirements. We are glad to have chosen to stay at The English Cottage.

We loved this place for its wonderful view of the peaks, warm hospitality of the hosts and deliciously sumptuous food. The cottage itself is a treasure trove of artefacts and gives a feeling of love and warmth.

The view of Kanchenjunga is very clear from the deck and is the highlight of this property. The hosts are warm and gracious. We got stuck in the traffic and got late one night and service manager Mr. Rai was very resourceful in getting delicious dinner arranged for us that late. Access to property can be challenging for very senior citizens as the it is a steep road to the beautiful property.

A slice of paradise in Darjeeling . The English Cottage is Darjeeling to us - the stunning views ( even though we missed the Kanchenjunga due to the fog ) the quiet , the chirping of birds , the stunning rooms , the warmth , the hospitality , the location - it reflects and embodies the spirit and magnificance of the mountains . Spotting it was a lucky stroke . Booking was seamless with constant and prompt answers to all queries . They booked the car for pick up from the airport and the organisation was very smooth . On arrival their ever smiling staff was standing to greet us and take our luggage to the cottage . I find walking a tad bit difficult but the cottage was worth every bit . Infact the walk is very short and easily doable . We were welcomed by mr Basant rai - the manager - he and his team took care of us with the warmest smile all through the four days . From serving hot momos to chicken paratha rolls the food was tasty and felt like home . The staff - from housekeeping to service - each and everyone is polished and polite and with such pleasing personalities . They are from the hills and show how you can leave a mark through softness and calm . The breakfast was a great spread and the menu kept changing . The rooms are so aesthetically done up - each corner reflects the taste of the owners - neat clean and well equipped . The bathrooms are modern and sparklingly clean . You feel you are staying in a painting . We were sent little snacks whenever we sat in the balcony as the warmest gestures from Mr and Mrs Jaiswal - from hot pakoras to freshly baked cakes . We were attended to at every second .- and were given packed breakfast when we left at 6 am in the morning . The so called high end hotels like Mayfair , Windermere and elgin paled in comparison to this beautiful homestay with undoubtedly the best view in Darjeeling . We can only say that the holiday would not have been this charming if we had stayed anywhere else in Darjeeling which was teeming with crowds . Thanks for the warmth and hospitality . We will come back .

Excellent location where you can see the entire sleeping Buddha range of Kanchanjunga! The room was spacious, clean, comfortable and the picture window offered unforgettable views. The service was good - especially by Mr Rai. Great local recommendations for walks and eating places. I highly recommend the English cottage to visitors to Darjeeling !!

An absolutely amazing and memorable stay ! Stunning 180 degree view of the Kanchenjunga. Great, quiet location and yet a few minutes walk from the town centre. Excellent service provided by a friendly team ably led by the Manager, Mr Basant Rai. Special mention needs to be made of the kitchen staff who happily accommodated our cooking requests and always served with a smile. Thank you !!

Location: great, very close to Mall Rd. Service: excellent Accomodation: great The English Cottage is a Homestay close to the Mall Rd. We stayed in the 180 Room with it's own terrace providing panoramic views. The room is luxuriously appointed with every comfort provided for. From coffee, Darjeeling tea and cookies to electric blankets and a room heater. We were here for 3 nights and it was a total delight. A very good breakfast (by homestay standards) is included in the package and served in the lounge, with several hot veg and non-veg Indian & Western choices. Dinner can be pre-ordered and is served in the room. We had dinner in, every night and enjoyed the variety on offer. The property provides glass bottles of Aquagard water, no need for biting drinking water in plastic bottles. Mr Rai, the manager and the staff are very efficient and looked after us very well. Mr Rai helped in booking cars, to making lunch reservations and advised us on our local sightseeing. Strongly recommended. We are definitely returning. We loved our stay here. One point to note is that the property is built on a slope, like many Darjeeling hotels, so climbing up and down the stairs is required.

My parents and I were met with smiles and warmth from the moment we walked in. The English Cottage is a cozy little property that offers the ideal blend of homely comfort with hotel room level service. The 180 room was spacious and comfortable for the 3 of us. The hosts, Mrs. Sharon and Mr. Sanjeev, were incredibly sweet and we enjoyed a nice conversation together. Mr. Basanth Rai, manager of the cottage, will get anything you need done, while looking his dashing best. Our stay was nothing short of perfect (despite missing the Kanchenjunga due to weather), and we thank the staff and hosts for making it so :)

We had the most pinch-me stay at The English Cottage, Darjeeling!! Tucked away in a hush-quiet nook, yet just a 10 minute stroll to the bustle of the Mall Road — the best of both worlds. The whole place feels like an English garden: cozy, pretty, and full of warmth. Our suite had lovely old-world charm — spacious, classy, super comfy, and kept spotless by staff who were both efficient and kind. The living room was full of beautiful old keepsakes and amazing views, a favorite hangout spot. There were lots of outdoor spaces to relax and enjoy the beauty of the “Queen of the Hills” over a cup of chai. Breakfast there was a treat. Every morning brought something new and tasty. The hosts, Sharon and Sanjeev, were the cherry on top of this whole Darjeeling cake! So genuine, generous and glowing with kindness from start to finish. They guided us to the best places to visit, local bars and restaurants, and we made some good friends wherever we went. Easily one of our most memorable getaways. We’ve already started plotting our next visit!

Staying here felt like stepping into a piece of history. This charming old English bungalow has been beautifully preserved, with high ceilings, wooden floors, and a sit out that makes you want to linger over morning coffee. The real highlight was the staff. Every single person was genuinely warm and attentive without being intrusive. The owners offered us great local tips, and made us feel like house guests rather than hotel guests. Rooms were clean, cozy, and full of character. It’s not a flashy 5-star, but if you love heritage charm paired with heartfelt hospitality, this place is perfect. Wifi was a bit spotty but we didn’t mind unplugging.
