Stay at Kusuman Homestay, Kalimpong – A Memorable Experience We had to visit Kalimpong for some work and had to plan the trip within three to four days. Tickets for the Vande Bharat from Howrah were available, so our next concern was finding a suitable place to stay. Since our work was near the Army Public School and Kendriya Vidyalaya, we searched for accommodations nearby. After checking Google Maps reviews, I decided on Kusuman Homestay and called the owner, Narayan Chhetri bhaiyya. Our room was booked for three nights. On the day of our journey, we boarded the Vande Bharat Express from Howrah at 5:55 AM, which departed on time and arrived at NJP 10-15 minutes ahead of schedule. From there, we headed out to find a Tata Magic to Siliguri Pani Tanki, where we got a direct bus to Kalimpong. Luckily, we found two seats, and after a nearly three-hour journey—including some traffic at Sevok Road—we arrived. Dada (Narayan Chhetri) was already waiting at the Kalimpong bus stand to receive us with his car. The ride to Kusuman Homestay took about 20 minutes. About the Room We had booked a basic yet comfortable room—nothing fancy, but clean and well-maintained. It included all essential amenities, including a TV (which we never used). The bathroom was spotless, equipped with a geyser and good water flow. Due to cloudy weather throughout our stay, we missed the Kanchenjunga view that dada mentioned is usually visible on clearer days. The only suggestion for improvement would be better lighting inside the room—a 20-watt LED baton would make a significant difference. I hope dada takes care of this. The USP of Kusuman Homestay The moment you step into Kusuman Homestay, it feels like entering a beautiful garden. Plants surround you from all sides. You enter through their well-decorated dining space, which features numerous succulents and flowering plants, all maintained by dada himself. He also runs a nursery with a vast collection of plants. The homestay has a tiny but well-designed garden, complete with a sitting area and a DIY fish pond. In total, there are three sitting areas, perfect for evening addas or jamming sessions. What makes this place truly unique is how they have creatively reused waste materials. Plastic bottles and containers are cut and shaped into animals and artistic designs, showcasing their eco-friendly and artistic approach. Dada is currently expanding the homestay, with additional floors under construction. I believe the new rooms will offer even better views. The homestay also provides bonfire and barbecue facilities, though we didn’t opt for them this time. Also you will have access to WiFi making it perfect for staycations as well. The Food – A Delightful Experience Over the past few years, we have stayed at various homestays across North Bengal, from Peshok to Rangaroon, and we have always been impressed by the homemade food. Kusuman Homestay was no exception! Bhabhi’s cooking was outstanding, with fresh organic vegetables from their garden and desi chicken adding an extra layer of authenticity and flavor. From sabjis to vermicelli to gajar ka halwa, everything was simply delicious. If I had to rate the food, I’d give it 11 out of 10! Final Thoughts If you’re planning a stay on the outskirts of Kalimpong, I highly recommend Kusuman Homestay. It is conveniently located within a 15-20 minute walk from Morgan House and the Golf Course. Sightseeing options are also available, though we didn’t opt for them this time. For a peaceful, eco-friendly stay with delicious homemade food, Kusuman Homestay is a great choice!
